Brazil legend Socrates dies
Brazil legend Socrates Close UsiaMantan the Brazilian national team captain, Socrates, died of intestinal infections, Sunday (4/12/2011), said a spokesman for the Albert Einstein Hospital, Sao Paulo, Brazil. Socrates died at the age of 57 years.
Socrates, who captained Brazil to World Cup 1982 and known as the greatest Brazilian player who never won the World Cup, was taken to hospital on Friday (12/02/2011) night after suffering from food poisoning.
The hospital says that Socrates suffered septic shock and placed on a ventilator and dialysis machines, but he kemudianndinyatakan had died at 06.30 GMT.
He has been hospitalized twice in August and September this year, due to bleeding in the digestive system, which is known to be caused by a problem with alcohol, especially when he was still active as a football player.
In his last television interview, Socrates mengatatan, her alcohol is a 'friend', adding that regular alcohol use did not affect performance on the football field.
"Alcohol does not affect my career, on the other hand it is caused (because) I never establish a physical for this game," he said at the time.
"Football is the only profession since I was ready to (age) 24 (years old)," said Socrates.
"I'm too skinny, and when I was younger, I had no chance to prepare my physical for sports."
Socrates also played at the 1986 World Cup, but by then he was not in the best physical condition. In fact, he also failed to scored a penalty kick when Brazil lost to France in the quarter-finals.
At club level, he played for Brazilian giants, Corinthians (1978-1984) and the Italian football club Fiorentina together (1984-1985).
When strengthening the Corinthians, he is one of the founders of the movement known as Democracy Corinthians, which is formed in the period of the 1980s.
Under these regulations, all decisions made by the football club, including players new contracts and training schedules, must be approved by all members through a voting mechanism.
